Ecobee Smart Thermostat Installation & Setup Guide

Professional installation guide for Ecobee thermostats including Premium, Enhanced, and Essential models with Power Extender Kit (PEK) instructions.

Required Tools

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 3/16" drill bit
  • Smartphone
  • Level (optional)

Check Compatibility First

Before installation, verify your system is compatible.

Steps:

  1. Download the ecobee app on your smartphone
  2. Use the app's built-in compatibility checker
  3. Take a photo of your current thermostat wiring for reference
  4. Visit ecobee.com if you need additional compatibility information

Pro Tips:

  • The compatibility check only takes a few minutes and can save hours of frustration

Turn Off Power - Safety First

Always disconnect power before working on electrical systems.

Steps:

  1. Turn off HVAC power at the circuit breaker or master switch
  2. For boiler systems: verify the main flame is extinguished
  3. Wait 5 minutes for all capacitors to discharge

Important Warnings:

  • HVAC systems contain high voltage wires - never skip this step
  • If you're unsure about any electrical work, hire a professional

Remove Old Thermostat

Document your existing wiring before making any changes.

Steps:

  1. Pop off or unclip the thermostat cover
  2. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything
  3. Label each wire using the provided stickers as you disconnect
  4. Remove any jumper wires between Rc/Rh/R terminals (note their location)
  5. Unscrew and remove the old mounting plate

Pro Tips:

  • Take multiple photos from different angles
  • If there's a mercury thermostat, recycle it properly at a hazardous waste facility

Important Warnings:

  • Old thermostats may contain mercury - handle with care and recycle properly

Installation Path A: With C Wire (Easier)

If you have a C (common) wire, installation is straightforward.

Steps:

  1. Attach Backplate: Optional - use trim plate to hide old thermostat marks
  2. Pull wires through center hole of backplate
  3. Secure backplate with drywall anchors and screws
  4. Use level to ensure straight mounting
  5. Connect Wires: Insert wires into SIDE (not front) of terminal blocks
  6. Press lever to insert wires easily
  7. Match wire labels to terminals: Rc, G, Y, W, C, etc.
  8. Gently tug each wire to ensure secure connection
  9. Push excess wire into wall opening to prevent drafts
  10. Snap thermostat onto backplate until it clicks
  11. Turn power back on at breaker
  12. Follow on-screen setup instructions

Installation Path B: Without C Wire (Needs PEK)

If you don't have a C wire, use the included Power Extender Kit.

Steps:

  1. Verify PEK Compatibility: Works with 3-4 wires (W/W1, Y/Y1, G, and R or Rc/Rh)
  2. If you have fewer wires, call ecobee support: 1-877-932-6233
  3. Go to HVAC System: Find your furnace/air handler (basement/attic/utility closet)
  4. Open HVAC Panel: Remove cover to reveal control board
  5. Take Photo: Document current control board wiring
  6. Label Wires: Only label R, Y/Y1, G, W/W1 going to thermostat
  7. Install PEK Module: Disconnect labeled wires from control board
  8. Connect wires to EQUIP side of PEK module
  9. Connect PEK's STAT side wires to control board terminals
  10. Connect PEK's C wire to C terminal on control board
  11. Return to Thermostat: Mount backplate (optional trim plate)
  12. Connect in Order: First connect Rc (or R), C, and PEK wires
  13. Then connect remaining wires: G, Y, W, etc.
  14. Push excess wire into wall opening
  15. Snap thermostat onto backplate
  16. Close HVAC Panel Completely: Some systems won't start if panel is open
  17. Turn power back on
  18. Follow on-screen setup prompts

Important Warnings:

  • High voltage wires present at control board - use caution
  • Wire connection order matters with PEK - follow steps exactly

On-Screen Setup & Registration

Complete the initial configuration on your new ecobee.

Steps:

  1. Welcome screen appears when powered on
  2. Connect to WiFi network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz supported)
  3. Create or log into your ecobee account
  4. Configure equipment type (furnace, heat pump, etc.)
  5. Set preferences for scheduling and smart features
  6. Pair SmartSensors if included with your model
  7. Run heating and cooling tests to verify installation

Troubleshooting

Common issues and solutions.

Steps:

  1. Thermostat won't power on: Check all wire connections (tug test), verify power is on at breaker, confirm HVAC panel is fully closed, if using PEK verify wiring is correct
  2. Thermostat rocks on wall: Push excess wires deeper into wall opening
  3. Temperature reading inaccurate: Cover large holes behind thermostat - drafts affect readings
  4. Need help: Call ecobee support at 1-877-932-6233 or email support@ecobee.com

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Power Extender Kit (PEK)?

The PEK is included with most ecobee thermostats and allows installation when you don't have a C (common) wire. It installs at your furnace control board and provides continuous power to the thermostat.

Can I install an ecobee myself?

Most homeowners can install an ecobee in about 45 minutes following the in-app instructions. However, if you're not comfortable working with electrical systems, professional installation is recommended.

Do I need a C wire for ecobee?

A C wire is recommended but not required. If you don't have one, you can use the included Power Extender Kit (PEK) which installs at your furnace.

Does ecobee work with my HVAC system?

Ecobee works with most 24V HVAC systems including gas, oil, electric furnaces, and heat pumps. Use the compatibility checker in the ecobee app before purchasing.
