Carrier Heat Pump Installation in Walnut Creek
Completed May 26, 2026
HVAC replacement project for a 2,700 sq. ft. single-story home, with a focus on comfort, proper system sizing, and ductwork improvements.
The homeowner contacted Galaxy Services for a quote on a full HVAC replacement for his 2,700 sq. ft. single-story home in Walnut Creek. The existing system consists of an 80% gas furnace located in the garage and central air conditioning. The home also has a mix of ceiling and floor ductwork due to an addition completed approximately 15 years ago.
During the consultation, the homeowner wanted to evaluate the undersized duct run serving the master bedroom, review electrical panel capacity due to an existing Tesla Level 2 charger, and ensure proper system sizing through a Manual J load calculation. The main priorities were reliability, year-round comfort, and cost-effectiveness, with installation timing and minimal disruption being especially important for the family with an infant at home.
Project details
Customer problem
The homeowner is planning a full HVAC replacement and wants to address the existing ductwork limitations, confirm electrical capacity for a potential heat pump, and ensure the new system is properly sized.
Previous system
80% AFUE gas furnace with central air conditioning. The furnace is located in the garage, with ceiling and floor ductwork serving different parts of the home.
Recommendation and why
A Carrier variable-speed heat pump system was selected as the proposed replacement option to provide electric heating and cooling. The project also includes evaluating the ductwork and electrical capacity, along with proper load calculations, to help ensure the system suits the home's requirements.
Installation challenges and work performed
The project scope includes inspection and minor sealing or repair of existing ductwork as needed to meet city code, cleaning and sealing duct boots, insulating and sealing plenums and sheet-metal transitions, and ensuring proper condensate drainage. Installation provisions include a new condenser pad, electrical disconnect and whip, refrigerant locks, condensate safety components, and other necessary connections where applicable. The existing refrigerant line set will be flushed, and the old equipment will be removed and disposed of. Floor protection and cleanup are included.
Equipment details
The proposed system consists of a Carrier 37MUHAQ60 variable-speed heat pump, rated at 60,000 BTU with 17.5 SEER2 and 9.5 HSPF2 efficiency, paired with a Carrier 45MUHAQ60 air handler.
